The Spirit of Prophecy
Scripture:
The Spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus, which encompasses the book of Revelation itself. God warns that no one is to add anything to this testimony.
- "The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ." Revelation 1: 1-2
- “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy.” Revelation 19:10
- "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll." Revelation 22:18
Ellen G. White:
Currently, the SDA organization refers to her writings as “The Spirit of Prophecy,” alluding that her writings with all of their factual errors are the very testimony of Jesus. It is every individual’s personal responsibility to test “messengers” or “prophets” according to scripture. In her writings, it is evident that a large body of work is riddled with plagiarism, failed prophecies, and blatant falsehoods that cannot be attributed to the Son of God. Her "Present Truth" is a vast amount of extra-biblical writing which she claimed was the testimony of Jesus, therefore adding them to the words of testimony of Jesus in Revelation. Following is the official position of the SDA church, endorsing all of Ellen’s teachings, as well as Ellen's own words claiming her writings were the Spirit of Prophecy.
- “The Gift of Prophecy - The scriptures testify that one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church, and we believe it was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G. White. Her writings speak with prophetic authority and provide comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction to the church. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested." SDA Fundamental Belief Number 18
- "The Spirit of Prophecy is of God. When visions came to me, the Lord gave me understanding that the Spirit of Prophecy was to correct spacious errors and to spectify what is truth." Letter 206 (1906)
- "The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy. The Spirit, the character, of Christ, in His witnesses, is the testimony given for Him. If you bear the testimony given you of the Lord, you will have the Spirit of prophecy." Letter 8 (1890)
- "The very last deception of Satan will be to make of none effect the testimony of the Spirit of God. ...The work of the Spirit of Prophecy will be light to God's people to the end of time." Letter 12, (1890); Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 48
- "Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light. The Spirit of Prophecy has been despised by those who should have reverenced and cherished this gift." Review and Herald, Jan. 20 (1903)
